New Deba Account Manager

With the new year we welcome new Account Manager Phil Hodgins who will be looking after most of our London and Kent business.

He brings with him a wealth of experience in the water treatment industry - you can read more about Phil’s career in the ‘About Us’ section here.

When Phil is not working hard you can normally find him trying to get as much practice as possible out on the shooting field.

Meanwhile, Ian Stratful has reduced his hours to working three days a week to concentrate on his main clients and to spend the rest of his time looking after his baby daughter.

Cooling Tower Surveys

During a recent cooling tower survey, we found a huge build up of slime in the cooling towers which can harbour and provide nutrients for Legionella bacteria.

We recommended that the Legionella risk assessment and the water treatment programme be reviewed as a matter of urgency as we feel that the towers present a considerable risk at the moment. This was further compounded by the fact that the towers were observed to have large amounts of drift coming from the fan area whilst in operation.  As a precaution we recommended that the towers be cleaned every 3 months until the conditions are improved and the source of the slime has been identified.

Effluent Plant Control

A national food production company had difficulty reaching its local waste water authority consent limits for discharge of waste to foul sewer resulting in significant sewerage penalty payments.

Their original system, comprising of a DAF system with a balance tank and a number of mixing tanks for chemical dosing, had a limited capacity that had been exceeded due to changes in the volume of production (and therefore waste) and the nature of the resulting waste. Due to limited space it was impossible to increase the size of the process.

Deba’s answer: to optimise the chemistry of the waste treatment process by selection of the most efficient coagulant/flocculation combination together with improved homogenisation of the incoming waste and pH control of the waste reaching the DAF plant, utilising and Endress and Hauser Topclean control system.

Result: waste consent limits attained and a very significant reduction in effluent costs.
