Deba has recently won several large new contracts for cooling tower maintenance around the London area.  At one of these sites we are involved in a softener upgrading project as the current plant is not performing.  This has resulted in scaling of the system (see photo, right).  We have been involved in helping another new client to reduce water consumption on their cooling tower. This will save them £20k per year.

Meanwhile, we have been undertaking several large projects for long-standing clients, including a sump relining job which meant putting in a lot of hours  in order to meet the deadline. We received this note from our client:

“I would personally like to thank you and your team for an excellent job carried out over the Easter period.  Deba were tasked with a difficult engineering job in relining the cooling tower pond within the constraints laid down by the Engineering Team.  It says volumes about the way we have developed relationships with key suppliers that your team were prepared to work 24/7 over the last four days to achieve the results and ensure that the chilled water systems are operational for the coming week.  Will you pass on my thanks to your specialist cooling tower team who worked so professionally to complete the task within the tight timeframe.”

We have been working on some major works on the cooling towers for a large manufacturing company, and have been able to provide endoscopic pictures of the pack to ensure it is clean.

Brands Hatch Classic Car Championship

On 9th May some Deba representatives went along to the Classic Car Championships at Brands Hatch to support their sponsored car. Bernie from BB Coachworks in Dartford built the car from scratch and raced it in the Swinging 60s series.

24 Hour Karate Marathon

Deba Director Mike Platt will be taking part in a 24 hour karate marathon in June 2009. Silwood Park Karate will be raising money for Sebastians Trust, a local charity set up by a young boy who sadly died of cancer in 2003, to purchase a holiday home by the sea that would provide somewhere exclusively for families to spend precious time together, away from the hospitals and punishing treatment regimens that govern the lives of cancer patients.

For more information on Sebastian’s Trust, visit the website at http://www.sebastiansactiontrust.org/

The event will be held on June 13th 6am - June 14th 6am. The fund raising page is http://www.justgiving.com/silwoodparkkarate where you can make a donation and keep track of how much has been raised.

Charlton Athletic v Watford - Match Sponsorship Day

Deba UK were the proud sponsors of the 7th March match between Charlton Athletic and Watford at the ‘Valley’ ground, famous for the record attendance of 81,000 against Arsenal during the war years. This was our second annual outing to Charlton Athletic, and we invited some of our clients to join us, one of whom is an avid supporter of Watford FC, and a very fair outcome resulted in the score of 3-2 in favour of Watford, much to the disappointment of our sole Charlton fan.  The first outing last year was a 2-2 result, so it’s hoped that the tide may change for the “Addicks” in the third annual encounter – that’s providing they can avoid relegation of course.

Deba UK carried out the replacement of 70 anti-vibration spring mounts on cooling  tower and pipework for a client in London.

The springs had become fatigued, meaning their ability to absorb design loads and vibration was questionable.  The corrosion that was occurring to the spring mechanisms may have resulted in a component failure in the future. There was also excessive floating movement to all three cooling towers and the main pipework.

Deba UK carried out replacement of cold water storage tanks and sprinkler storage tanks for a client in Central London. This was a complex project that necessitated careful planning to minimise disruption to the buildings’ tenants.  Work was carried out in phases, the work involved replacement of four 38m3 cold water storage tanks and two 78m3 sprinkler tanks. During sprinkler work the system was connected to the town mains water supply to provide limited protection.

A representative of the building’s managing agents commented:

“We were delighted with how smoothly the project was implemented, particularly given the quantities of materials involved and the amount of manual handling required. The work was managed as a single project across the two buildings and, crucially, the tenants were hardly aware of the work being carried out”.

Deba’s sponsored car was racing at Lydden Hill at the end of the month, coming first in class and 10th overall in Sunday’s race.  Bernie is currently levelling his class in the Tintop Challenge by points.  He has been invited by guest invitation to race with Dunlop Motorsport News Saloon Car Championship supporting truck racing at Brands Hatch GP circuit on 1st August.

We have been working on a project to refurbish cooling towers, including re-lining the ponds, tongue and groove GRP panelling, and laying a new floor around the towers.

April 2008

This month our last contract with care homes finished, marking Deba’s full withdrawal from this market.

This was a hard choice to make, as Director Mike Platt explained.

“When water temperature is below 200C, Legionella bacteria lie dormant and are killed in water above 600C. Like us, they love temperatures of 200C-450C. This presents problems anywhere that people use warm water, particularly where there are vulnerable people such as children or the elderly, where hot water taps have to be moderated.  So it’s important that checks are regularly carried out.

“Care homes generally operate on low margins in order to make their services affordable. Working with care homes we have often been reliant on individuals following our instructions locally. In many cases these instructions and recommendations have been passed on to third parties by the people we have been dealing with. This situation has not been ideal, as we cannot monitor this kind of arrangement closely.

“We have therefore taken the tough decision to take on no further monitoring contracts within the care home arena, but to focus our attentions on the areas in which we excel and over which we have greater control on implementation, cooling towers.

“We have emerged as the only supplier in the UK to provide water treatment and bespoke engineering and maintenance solutions for cooling towers. This means that our customers don’t have to deal with two contractors or subcontractors, and have a single point of contact for the programme, ensuring a consistent service.

“We will continue investing in our team’s programme of continuous improvement and will work with official bodies such as the HSE to ensure that we remain at the top of our game!”

Enduro Africa

We recently sponsored one of our clients in an 8 day charity motorcyle ride across some of  South Africa’s most rugged and isolated terrain.  Mark Hollinshead took part in Enduro Africa 2009 and helped to raise in excess of £250,000 for charities including Touch Africa, whose brief is to make the children’s school life better than their home life.  The trip funded a project which renovated a school; painting, laying carpets, fitting doors and windows, and building an adventure playground.
